Bain Capital one of the world’s largest private equity firms has teamed upwith an American property developer to invest $60 million (£31 million) inJingsheng Group. China’s 80 billion yuan (£5. 3 billion) home improvement market is growing 13per cent a year and has proved such a draw that China is the only placewhere all three Western companies compete. But these big-box retailers hold less than 5 percent between them… Its margins are tight and analysts haveexpressed concern about the retailer’s ability to increase them. Steve Gilman head of Asian operations said that additional scale along withthe opening of a centralised distribution point next year will mean grossmargins will continue to grow. What is attracting private equity money to the home-improvement malls is theirhigh margins of 30 per cent. Effectively they are landlords renting space tosmall businesses adding new outlets and increasing rents as well. These firms also control a bigger slice of the home-improvement market —between 10 and 15 per cent. Mr Chen vice-president of Jingsheng said: “The B&Q model doesn’tsuit the consumption habit of the Chinese. A B&Q mall is only 20000 to30000 sq m.

They alsocome from a family and live within strong friendship groups towhich they have a responsibility. A former colleague of mine at our generally family-friendlyworkplace recently confided that he found those with young childrenwere treated far differently to those who didn’t. Those who hadyoung children he told me could ask to work from home or leaveearly and argue for many different working arrangements if theydesired them. Despite having a range of his own reasons for wantingto work from home he felt that he couldn’t do that because hedidn’t have children. The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family andHuman Services’ recent report Balancing Work and Familydemonstrated that government supports this narrow definition ofwork and family balance. nly one of the five recommendationcategories addressed issues beyond women families and childcare. Similarly while the final recommendation category was titled”Elder and Disability Carers” it did little more than recommendchanges to funding arrangements of government-recognised carers… This is the nature of the political work culture and it is notlimited to those serving the public. The pressure to be productivethrives just as much in the private sphere. We can’t look to ourleaders in government or business if we are seeking people todemonstrate well-rounded and balanced lives. n the contrary weare blindly following them into a culture of more work and lessplay. Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Australian Social Trendsdata says “very long hours of work (50 hours or more per week)have become more common for full-time workers in the 20 years since1985 particularly for men. In 2005 30 per cent of men workingfull-time worked 50 hours or more per week”. This is up from 22 percent in 1985.

Shrutika warns that Trudy will run off with everything in her mouth if not carefully monitored. ?We spent all day searching for my dad?s cell phone charger only to find Trudy happy in her bed chewing on the charger. ?Nadya Singh?s export business allows her to work from home and keep an eye on her two dogs at the same time. They are not her pets she insists; they?re her babies. But occasionally even her babies have to be sent to their room when guests come over. Not used to being shut up the dogs have been known to scratch at the doors wanting to be let out. Nadya installed opaque acrylic sheets on the inside of the bedroom doors to protect the paint.
