She should know as ‘the first woman to have obtained a computer science (CS) degree from any of the Indian Institutes of Technology’ a PhD from Stanford University in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and a successful entrepreneur. Ms Goyal is however hopeful of better times for women. “I see a change with Indian companies that are beginning to create a better eco-system that supports women at work in terms of availability of quality childcare creating women forums that allow for mentoring flexi-time re-hiring work from home etc” she says responding over the email to questions from Business Line. Excerpts from the interview. How has been your journey thus far beginning from IIT?I went from being a student in IIT Kanpur to being a PhD student in CS at Stanford University. Stanford was a humbling and inspiring place where one got to learn with and from the best in the world. After graduating from Stanford I joined Hewlett-Packard (HP) Labs and learned how to apply research skills to real world problems… Should entrepreneurs be trend-oriented? Trends are interesting because they capture some market belief and usually either offer new problems to be solved or new ways to solve old problems. However blind pursuit of trends is what led to the dot com bust in 2000. Question is not whether a business is following a trend but rather what is the value being created by the company. For example the Internet has fundamentally changed the way many businesses are done and several large companies have been built on this realisation. Thus a web-based startup will succeed because it solves a real business problem not because of a trend. Conversely using the web for the sake of using it can be a recipe for disaster. Latest trends do not change the fundamentals.

Early this year Public Works and Government Services Minister Michael Fortier said he was looking to unload nine federal properties in a sell-leaseback deal worth at least $1. In the end it was worth even more as a week ago they sold for a combined $1… And with an estimated $4 billion worth of repairs renovations and “green” modifications required to bring the nine buildings up to snuff it made sense to have the costs picked up by someone other than taxpayers Mr. If the necessary work isn’t done by Larco in the next decade the government pays less rent. Up to 40 properties have been listed over the past few months as other potential sell-leasebacks 22 of them in ttawa although the department will not confirm whether it is actively looking for sellers. And with more than 300 properties in its portfolio nationally even a small sell-off could result in a boon for local construction companies eager to bid on refurbishment or retrofit tenders. So does that mean ttawa is in store for a flood of redevelopment work? Maybe maybe not. “There’s a schedule of capital works that must be completed in a 10-year period” said Thaddas Alston executive director for Larco.
