It requires strong discipline and a true passion for the product. “Sometimes it’s 9 or 10 at night and if I walk by my office I’ll sit down and start something” Gallant said. “It has to be something that you really enjoy doing.

It’s been a mainstay of the community for decades but has faced its share of uncertainty in recent years with changes in ownership and fears of jobs being shipped overseas. In fact the parent company has even sent up representatives from its Mexican operations lately for training leading many employees to conclude it’s only a matter of time before their jobs are shipped south of the Rio Grande… They should have pursued a higher education to improve their prospects. Which of course is a viewpoint born of complete and utter ignorance. Somebody had to work in our factories take those semi-skilled jobs endure the hellishness of shift-work to provide the rest of us with the modern conveniences and toys we take for granted. What are we supposed to do now ship them off to work in the offshore factories where their jobs have gone? There used to be a sense of pride in getting one’s hands dirty with an honest day’s work. Now there is only a demoralized feeling of betrayal that their contribution to the economy has earned them little more than a kick in the teeth. The crisis facing our manufacturing workforce should serve as a call to action for our political leaders to put aside their partisan agendas and start working together on real solutions to our problems. There was one glimmer of hope on this front last week when the feds and the Ontario government stopped bickering long enough to announce a new retraining program in which the feds will invest almost $1.

Should we change our mortgage tointerest-only and use the balance of our mortgage payments tosalary sacrifice into super – then when we retire at 60 pay off thebalance? That would be a great strategy as it would enable you to takeadvantage of the difference between the 15 per cent contributionstax to super and your own marginal rate which would be at least31. At age 60 you could withdraw the money tax-free topay the house off. I am 47 with a wife and two young children… Under the Centrelink aged pension assets test theprincipal place of residence is excluded. If the property isleased generating rental income is the income included as part ofthe income test? My wife and I are approaching retirement andcontemplating travelling. We are considering renting out our homeduring this period or possibly doing a house exchange. Weappreciate that our income will be assessable for income tax aswould any pension received. However we are interested in findingout the treatment of the rental income for the pension incometest. The income derived from a principal place of residence let outto tenants is most certainly counted for the income means test inthe same way as normal rental income on an investment propertywould be considered. With the income test Centrelink takes intoconsideration the net income (rental income less any mortgagepayments that may be applicable less any non-capital expenses) andcan request a tax return to confirm the costs.

Another option if you haven’t already done so is to expand your company’s reach to new markets where the housing downturn is not as severe. According to statistics from the NAR the average home price in Boise the closest major market to you dropped 5. 5% in the fourth quarter of 2007. But other parts of the country are still seeing double-digit growth in home prices including not-too-distant markets like Yakima Wash. where prices increased 18% or San Jose Calif. where they rose 11%.
