Entrepreneur behind booming new company credits college education March 27 2008 Mike Funston Staff Reporter Community college taught Christopher Rowland the basic business skills and fostered the entrepreneurial spirit he used to start a freight forwarding company that has earned a 907 per cent profit in three years. The 30-year-old Toronto resident graduated with a business administration diploma from Centennial College after learning about the transportation business first-hand through a variety of jobs from loading and dispatching trucks to driving them. Rowland’s success since starting Equitrans Global Logistics has made him a poster boy and strong advocate for Ontario’s college system. Last month he was named one of six recipients of a 2007 Premier’s Award honouring outstanding college graduates. Rowland says students and employers should take a closer look at what colleges have to offer and shed the bias many have in favour of university… "I liked to take my profs out for lunch and rattle their brains with questions. I couldn’t see doing that in a class of 300 at university. "Married at 21 and working his way through school he used Centennial to give him the flexibility to balance his class schedule with his work and home life and gain a learning experience of good quality. "When students are looking at what educational path to take college is worth considering because it gives you the applied skills to use right away. "And for employers he has this to say: "What you’re going to get with a college graduate is a more focused and determined employee. College students know what they’re there for and what they plan on doing when they get out. "Rowland already employs six people at his young company which acts as a middleman or broker between transportation companies and those with freight to move.
Taxman can inspect ‘at-home’ companies
Contractor UK – Mar 27, 2008
Under the Finance Bill 2008 HMRC officials can “inspect” the assets or records of a home-based business if they believe the inspection is “reasonably required. But the bill is expected to confirm that there will be no right of appeal for the taxpayer against such a visit which would normally require notice from the Revenue of just 24 hours. Critics of the proposals due to take effect from April 1 2009 worry that taxpayers will not be able to object or in the spirit of the law assert that the visit is not “reasonably required” if they have no right to appeal. They also wonder how HMRC will advise its inspectors to act lawfully given that they will not be allowed to access parts of the taxpayer’s home which are not for business use. Without a day’s notice an inspection can still proceed “by or with the agreement of an authorised officer” but HMRC claimed in notes this will be used only “exceptionally.
