Huff from Kentucky. Huff left Sterchi in 1923 to found a funeral home with Paul Campbell a fellow Sterchi employee. They eventually sold the business to Paul Cook Huff’s nephew who ran the home when Oakley first went to work there as a 14-year-old. Five years later Oakley left Cook to work for David Akard Sr. The Oakleys and the Akards were close friends then taking vacations together. But some 10 years down the road Oakley returned to where he started buying Cook’s business in 1978. By the time he was 28 years old Oakley had begun to think of funeral services as his calling.

Richard Henderson publisher of Home Business Magazine said the trend is gaining momentum because the home-business market moves in reverse to the overall economy. “I call it a negative barometer” Henderson said. “As the economy skids into recession and possibly into depression home-based business activity increases. “He said it’s a natural reaction for people to attempt a home-based business because it is “the easiest thing to move into. “Capital and start-up investment is minimal compared to an outside-the-home business” he said.

I work for a company of consultants. One of our clients has invited its staff and all the consultants to a business luncheon in December. I rotate weeks working one in Pittsburgh (at home) and one in Buffalo at the client’s office. The luncheon is scheduled while I’ll be in Pittsburgh. I have already been asked about my schedule by my company’s project manager and I explained that I do not want to alter my schedule nor do I wish to attend. I’m at the end of my career so it’s not a concern to me.
